SEO for small businesses: what really matters

No trick, no promise: which basics a website needs for Google and AI search, and which of them can run in the background.

"How do I get to number 1 on Google?" is one of the most common questions owners ask about their website. The honest answer: nobody can guarantee that, not even us. Anyone who promises it is selling you something other than the truth.

What you can do is make sure your website is easy to understand, for visitors and for search engines. That is less mysterious than it sounds.

What really helps

Search engines and AI search ultimately want the same thing: an answer that fits the question. A few simple things count for that.

What you control yourself

Two things you can improve without any technology.

First: name, address and phone number should read the same everywhere. On the website, in the legal notice, in your Google profile, on social media. Small differences do not matter to people, but to automated systems they are a contradiction.

Second: keep your pages up to date. A website that still shows last year's opening hours costs trust. Visitors notice at once, and they leave. That is why being up to date is not a side issue but part of SEO.

Technology that has to be right

Even without expert knowledge, the basics are worth a look:

  1. The page loads fast and reads well on a phone.
  2. The headings are structured cleanly: one main heading, with subheadings below it.
  3. Every photo has alt text describing what can be seen. That helps people with screen readers and search engines alike.
  4. Links lead to their destination and not nowhere.

That sounds like small things. But on a website that is maintained on the side, exactly these small things are the first to fall off the table.

Why maintenance and SEO belong together

A change on the website is rarely just one change. New opening hours appear in several places. A new photo needs alt text. A new subpage needs a title and a description. Anyone who has to think of all that by hand every time will forget something eventually.

That is why SEO runs in the background with Theo. Meta texts, alt texts and a clean page structure are part of it from the start. Theo analyses your visitor numbers and tells you where the potential lies. On top of that you get a weekly report with recommendations. SEO is included in the package and keeps developing, more on that under pricing.

What you do for that: you write to Theo what should change. A text change takes 2 to 4 minutes, a photo or a new section 4 to 8 minutes. Why small changes should not take a week is in the post Why a small change to your website should not take a week.

And the guarantee?

There is none, and that is a good thing. Nobody controls what Google shows. You control how clear and up to date your website is. That is the part you can influence, and the part we can take over for you.
